Yes, Your Dog Needs Sunscreen Too

Updated: Apr 19, 2020

Summer is here and that means lots of fun times outdoor and sun bathing with your dogs. Well, before you head out that door, there is something important to do for both you & YOUR DOG. Can you guess what it is? We all know that sun protection is super important to us humans if we are to prevent against skin cancer and early premature skin aging. Well, your dog also needs sun protection! This may surprise some of us, but dogs get sun damage just as we humans do. This is especially the case with lighter colored pooches. Even with darker colored dogs, sun protection is vital. Places on their bodies particularly vulnerable to sun damages are the belly, where there is much less fur and skin is exposed and tip of their nose. You may wonder, why worry about sun damage to the belly if it is facing down to the ground? Well, we all walk on asphalt at least for some part of our walks. Lots of asphalt is light colored. When UV rays hit the light colored surface, it bounces back. This means that the UV rays hitting the asphalt bounces back and hits right on your dog's belly causing UV damage.

In choosing the sun screen, you would want to make sure that you use DOG sunscreen. Sunscreens made for humans contain zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid which is toxic to dogs.

So slather that sunscreen on your pup, and go enjoy the sun worry-free!

I really love Epi-Pet Sun Protector Spray for all the dogs I care, because it is safely formulated for dogs and it doesn't ever get sticky on their fur! Check this dog sun screen out on the link below!

PAW TIP: Apply the sunscreen 20 min. before heading out the door so that it has the chance to get absorbed and bind with your dog's skin.
