Amid all the horror stories of store bought pet food brands, I was feeling lost in deciding the best pet food brands for my pets. I poured over those pet food review sites to see what brands were rated among the highest, but seemed like every time I thought I found a brand I could trust, recall would happen. So when I learned about the companies offering freshly cooked pet food subscription service, it didn’t take much to convince me that this was something well worth trying.
The brand I chose for doggies was The Farmer’s Dog. For my cat, I chose Nom Nom Now. Below are my feedback of the brands broken down to categories.
Quality
The Farmer’s Dog: What really caught my attention was the word “human grade” food. Hey, if it’s good enough for human, it must be good enough for the dogs, right? The Farmer’s Dog states that their human grade food gets cooked in their kitchen. This was another factor that attracted me to the brand. Their food gets cooked in a kitchen, as opposed to, processed in a factory, like many store bought pet foods do. I thought to myself, sign me up! After feeding the dogs the The Farmer's Dog food, I specifically noticed improved quality in their skin health. My rescue chihuahua suffers from environmental skin allergy and was prone to develop red, inflamed, and itchy skin patches especially on his paws. He still does have these patches and does require treatment at the vet periodically, but the severity of it has lessened since starting to feed him The Farmer's Dog food. His coat is also shiny and smooth!
NomNomNow: The reason I chose NomNomNow was simple, maybe too simple. I loved Farmer's Dog so much, but they did not offer cat food. So I searched for companies similar to Farmer's Dog that also made cat food, and that's how I found NomNomNow. My cat has suffered UTI a decade ago and I learned that poor diet is one of the factors. He was on medicated cat food specifically formulated for cats with tendencies to develop UTI for years following the episodes. Even years after having no occurrence of UTI and getting him off the medicated cat food, I have been always careful about the quality of cat food I give to him. NomNomNow has not disappointed me in that he continues to have good coat and energy level, but what really was different with it from the other cat food brand is, his "waste" no longer has odor since switching his diet to it. The NomNomNow website explains this change in your pet's "waste" to be due to the fact that whole food ingredients without any fillers they use in their food leads to better digestion of all the nutrients and less waste. Easier clean up time with fresher air after my cat goes to bathroom is a bonus to his improved health!
Excitement of My Pet at Meal Time
The Farmer's Dog: Most dogs at my house are pretty food driven. They love all kinds of treats and just loves to eat. Even then, the store bought dry dog food was not appealing to my chihuahua sometimes. This happened especially in the morning, and I remember he would "run away" from the dry dog food that I was trying to feed him. This caused anxiety in me as I didn't know if it was because he was bored with the food or if he was actually ill and needed medical attention. The Farmer's Dog offers three recipes. Beef & Lentils, Pork & Sweet Potato, or Turkey & Parsnip. Since switching to Farmer's Dog, he dances with his toes hopping, jumping up and down at meal time. Never once did he refuse to eat since I switched his food to The Farmer's Dog.
NomNomNow: My cat has always meowed at mealtimes until I feed him and finishes all of his food with any kind of food that I have fed him, and continues to do so with NomNomNow. Since this behavior has always been the case throughout his life with all the brands I have fed him, I am not sure if he is more excited with NomNomNow than with other cat food brands or not. Nevertheless, it is good to know that he continues to be excited at mealtimes. NomNomNow offers four recipes for dogs. Hearland Beef Mash, Tasty Turkey Fare, Chicken Chow-Wow, or Porkalicious Potluck. For cats, they offer two recipes. Chicken Chow Meow or Flavorful Fish Feast. What's interesting is that they offer the option to auto rotate these recipes or get mixed recipes for those fur babies who get bored with their food.
Convenience
The Farmer's dog: The Farmer's Dog allows flexible shipment option in that you can opt to received shipment as frequent as every two weeks or just receive all of the month's food once a month. I opted to received the shipment only once a month, because I have enough space in the refrigerator to store month's worth of dog food. There is the option to rush or delay the shipment as well. The food is not packaged per each meal, so you do have to spoon out the appropriate portion at each meal.
NomNomNow: Like The Farmer's Dog, NomNomNow also allows the option of either getting the shipment bi-weekly or once a month. NomNomNow actually makes pre-portioned packages that you just open and dispose of at every meal. It may not be the most environmentally friendly way to package food, but it does make it convenient.
Price
The Farmer's Dog: My chihuahua is 9LB, and I pay about $1.45 per meal. (He eats twice a day)
NomNomNow: For my cat who is about 18LB (he's quite big), I'm paying about $2.54 per meal.
Since I switched to freshly cooked pet food subscription service, I'm a big believer in it, and I'm never going back to store bought dry pet food. I hope this trend is here to stay and grow!
PAW TIP: If you want to save space in the refrigerator and feed your pet potentially even fresher food by not having to thaw frozen food, opt for bi-weekly delivery 🐾
